Denver Honors Martin Luther King Jr. Day with Community Engagement and Service

Denver, Colorado, is set to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 19, 2026, with a series of events that highlight the city's commitment to community service and civic engagement. These activities underscore the shared responsibility and local leadership that are vital to the city's ongoing growth and unity.

 

The centerpiece of Denver's observance is the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Marade—a unique combination of a march and parade. Participants will gather at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. statue in City Park at 10:00 a.m. for an opening ceremony featuring Mayor Mike Johnston and other community leaders. The Marade will commence at 11:45 a.m., proceeding west along Colfax Avenue and concluding at Lincoln Veterans Memorial Park. This event serves as a powerful reminder of the collective action necessary to advance Dr. King's vision of equality and justice.

 

In addition to the Marade, Metropolitan State University of Denver will host the MLK Peace Breakfast on Friday, January 16, 2026. The event begins with check-in and breakfast at 8:30 a.m., followed by a program at 9:00 a.m. featuring keynote speaker Representative Park Cannon, a Georgia State Representative known for her dedication to expanding access to healthcare, housing, and education. The breakfast honors individuals who embody Dr. King's values through their contributions to peace, justice, and social change.

 

The City of Aurora will also commemorate the day with its 40th annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Opening Celebration. Themed "I am the Dream," this event will feature dynamic performances reflecting Dr. King's enduring impact, with Mayor Mike Coffman presenting an official proclamation. A prayer vigil hosted by the Aurora Community of Faith will follow, emphasizing the community's commitment to Dr. King's principles.

 

These events not only honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. but also encourage Denver residents to actively participate in shaping their community through service and engagement.
