Denver's Commitment to Youth Advocacy Reflects UNICEF's Founding Mission

Local Initiatives Embody Global Humanitarian Values

In 1946, UNICEF was established with a profound mission: to safeguard the well-being of children worldwide, recognizing that the future of humanity hinges on their protection and development.

This enduring vision resonates deeply in Denver, a city where community engagement and youth advocacy are integral to its identity.

Denver's dedication to its younger residents is evident through numerous initiatives aimed at fostering their growth and well-being.

In April 2025, the city partnered with UNICEF USA to embark on the Child Friendly Cities Initiative, a multi-year endeavor designed to create safer, healthier, and more inclusive environments by amplifying youth voices.

Mayor Mike Johnston emphasized this commitment, stating, "Becoming a UNICEF Child Friendly City is a promise and a commitment to our children and families to create a place where every child is safe, valued, and empowered to reach their full potential."

Beyond this partnership, Denver has implemented various programs to support its youth.

The Office of Children's Affairs offers resources such as the Denver Afterschool Alliance, ensuring access to quality afterschool programs, and the MY Denver Card, providing free access to recreation centers and cultural facilities for youth aged 5 to 18.

Addressing mental health, the Caring for Denver Foundation invested over $10.9 million in 2025 to strengthen youth mental health and substance misuse care, supporting 28 organizations dedicated to closing critical gaps in these services.

Additionally, the Denver Broncos Foundation's Inspire Change initiative focuses on supporting at-risk and justice-involved youth through services aimed at mitigating the negative impacts of the juvenile justice system.

These efforts underscore Denver's commitment to transforming compassion into organized action, mirroring UNICEF's foundational values.

By investing in programs that promote youth development, mental health resources, and educational opportunities, Denver demonstrates a steadfast dedication to its children.

Through these initiatives, the city not only honors the spirit of UNICEF's mission but also ensures that its youth have the stability, hope, and opportunity they deserve.
